The Center of the American Experiment, a conservative outfit based in Golden Valley, says its offices were firebombed last weekend in what the group is calling politically motivated violence.

CAE says office space of two other conservative groups — the Upper Midwest Law Center and TakeCharge — also suffered fire damage.

“The fires obviously were set by someone,” said John Hinderaker, president of CAE, in a press release Friday. He cited the fact that other, apolitical businesses in the three-story complex were unharmed.

The fire is being investigated as arson by the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office and the Hennepin County Fire Investigation team, according to a CAE release.

The fires occurred around 2 a.m. Sunday morning and were started outside the first-floor offices of CAE and TakeCharge, and in the third-floor offices of UMLC.

TakeCharge is run by Kendall Qualls, a Black conservative who unsuccessfully ran for governor and Congress. On X, TakeCharge compared the fire to white supremacist terrorism of the Ku Klux Klan: “Fire bombing under the cloak of darkness against a black man? Eerie. The only thing missing … is the white hood.”
